Conduit routing, cable pulling and passing conductors from section of switchgear to another just to name a few. Here's a crown box photo: (I know about the support and the 3' rule).

I see them used a lot, but be careful if it is used with switchgear. Often the sections and/or cubicles are insulated/isolated and the big crown box makes it one big happy single point of failure, which is no good. It also makes it easier for future pulls, so you can pull to the active gear and then penetrate and pull into the gear quicker.
