Does anyone know why we use cu. as an abbreviation for copper?

And in particular http://periodic.lanl.gov/elements/29.html
Cu is short for cuprum, the Latin word for copper
Most of the element abbreviations come from other languages. Thus Na (natrium) for Sodium, or W (wolfram) for Tungsten.
