We are working with a vendor who is designing the checkout counters for a large retailer. The register counters butt up to a half wall that is prefabricated and is made out of wood framing and MDF. To get power and data to the checkout there is a power pole mounted adjacent to the wall and the cables are fed from overhead.

They are proposing to build a raceway into the wall for the wiring. The raceway would be constructed of wood framing and MDF and have a continuous cover with a continuous piano hinge for access to the raceway.

I've looked in the code but cannot find a code section regarding raceways that are built on the site. Are they allowed or would I have to route the wiring in flex or rigid conduit within the raceway since this custom raceway is not listed.

Attached is a drawing showing the construction of the wall.

Thanks for your help

This is fairly common in retail, it happens I am home now because I worked last night at Toy 'R' Us relocating registars...in few weeks it will get the knee wall with cable pathways. :)

They are not 'wire ways' any more than a stud bay in a wall is a wire way. It's just a place to run cables.

As long as you are running cables, not individual conductors you are good to go.

Iwire..As a matter of fact that is who this is for. Our firm does a lot of the design work for Toys R Us and Babies R Us all over the country. Maybe you'll be working on one of our projects.

Another engineer at our office is the one working on this and he came over to me with the question regarding the raceway.
