Not really, on a bigger job instead of listing every item on the invoice you just reference the invoice back to the contract to include change orders. You should have a contract number and change order numbers that have been signed by the customer. This will give the details of the work performed and even materials used.
On a small job such as a service call you don't want to run a circuit for a microwave and end up responsible for the whole kitchen. On a small job it's easy enough to show a limited scope of work on the invoice.
Most of my invoices will show a contract number and a permit number. File a copy of the permit application away with the date it passed inspection along with the contract and that should cover you.
