Cut and paste the NEC?

I doubt there is a legal website for this. You can buy the NEC on CD-ROM and copy and paste from that. But be prepared to pay a hefty price for a 25 cent CD. Here's an example from the 2005:

210.8 Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel.
FPN: See 215.9 for ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel on feeders.
(A) Dwelling Units. All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in the locations specified in (1) through (8) shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.
(1) Bathrooms

Trevorrobmod, I bought the 08 NECHB cd from NFPA for $190. This will be my first E-version. I thought you were not allowed to copy this for any reason.

This was discussed on the forum before. It is technically illegal to copy and paste the nec but I doubt the publisher would do anything about it since it is being used as an educational tool. The nec is online for free so what would it matter if we paste a few sentences here or there. If anything we promote the sale of the book and cd.

I bought the handbook on CD, and it came to me "locked". By doing so, the cut and paste feature doesn't work. I had to find a hack to unlock the .PDF. The regular NEC on CD wasn't locked.

Thats got to be the 05 Marc, 08 doesn't come out until Feb. 08.
Yes, that's the one I'm talking about. Just giving guys the head's up that the .PDF will likely be locked, and they might not be able to cut and paste the way they hoped they might.

Cutting and pasting a few sentences here or there falls under fair use, regardless of what the publisher believes/says/makes you agree to via a click-license... If NFPA did try to go after anyone for quoting code on this forum they'd loose in court, and they (and their lawyers) know it.

If you copied an entire page then you're probably crossing that fair use line...

I agree. I'm no attorney but there has to be some amount of information (which is part of State law) that is permitted to be used. I'm saying State law because the NEC is adopted as law in the State of New Jersey. That adoption gives the user certain rights. Don't ask me what they are, but for educational purposes on this forum I don't see a problem.

If you can still highlight the text, you can CTRL + C to copy and then CTRL + V to paste. Just a thought.

Trust me when I say that Marc knows that possibility. Go to the online version. You cannot use te ctrl +C nor Ctrl +V features. His handbook CD would not allow it. The standard CD that you buy separately did not have this feature locked. At least that is what I understand.

I have the standard CD version of the 2005 NEC and the copy and paste function works. I'm not sure about the handbook version. I can understand the prohibition for the on-line version but IMO you should be able to copy and paste from a CD that you paid for.

That is what I was saying. The standard CD works fine but according to Marc the handbook version came locked so you could not cut and paste.
