Exactly. damaged lampcord usually isn't something that gets a service call from a pro.
If AFCI does what it is supposed to do there is supposed to be less hazard than there used to be.
I have seen exposed NM cable in a garage or storage room that gets sheath damaged just because it gets things rubbed against it frequently. It can go for long, long time without any incident. Protecting it better is just better insurance there will not be any incident.
The main question in my previous post was why is the rest of the cable run acceptable but the small section that did not run behind the gas pipe not acceptable. The risk of any physical damage is about the same IMO.
