I have a 10/3 dryer wire whose sheathing was damaged while drilling through a joist. The copper does not appear to be damaged.

Ideally, the best fix would be to replace the entire wire.

Would this solution be legal per NEC? Splice the wire inside a ceiling box for a nearby smoke detector assuming there was enough slack in the wire to do so?
