That's definitely true. I think you have to have a certain mindset when you're doing anything, whether it be a brake job or electrical troubleshooting. I try to make sure I cross all my "t"s and dot all my "i"s no matter what I'm doing.

The analogy of doing electrical compared to changing brake pads in terms of public safety just isn't valid.

If I do a poor job working on my own brakes, the only time the public is in danger is when that vehicle is driven on public roads. If I do a poor job installing electrical in a building, the public is in danger 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day until the unsafe condition is corrected.

I may not be driving my truck right how, so how unsafe are my brakes? At this moment, they are perfectly, 100% safe. NO ONE is going to be injured or killed by my being mechanically challenged at this time. BUT, an unsafe electrical install is ALWAYS LURKING THERE.

You DID repack and inspect your bearings on that last brake job you did yourself didnt you?? Ever seen a bearing let go on a front tire in rush hour traffic? The guy who did all his own brake jobs strikes again.
I COULD do it myself if I were so inclined, but I'm a busy guy so I get a shop to do it for me.

One time, after replacing the front bearing on my truck, they only hand-tightened the lug nuts. I discovered this fact about an hour later, while traveling about 70 MPH. Three of the nuts were still engaged to the studs, but with no thread showing.

Another time, a shop (not chosen by me) failed to tighten the camber adjustment bolts whilst performing a 4-wheel alignment. With one wheel jacked up off the ground there was about 30? of play in the steering.

You can be damned sure that if I did the work myself I would have brought out the torque wrench, as I take pride in everything that I do.

I've also seen a truck that lost a front wheel at the intersection leading on to the highway. Seems the shop with the golden touch forgot to even put the lug nuts back on.
