WE ARE INSTALLING A UPS IN A DATA CENTER. THERE IS A RAISED FLOOR. IS IT LEGAL TO INSTALL A CABLE TRAY UNDER THE RAISED FLOOR AND INSTALL OPEN POWER WIRING IN THE TRAY. THE TRAY WOULD BE UNDER THE UPS SO THE WIRE WOULD BE PROTECTED FROM DAMAGE. WE WOULD BE USING THHN. THE TRAY WOULD ALLOW US TO HIDE SOME OF THE POWER WIRING (300 AMP 480 VOLT FEEDERS) AND GIVE A CLEAN LOOKING INSTALLATION. WE WOULD USE NIPPLES OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE EQUIPMENT TO GET THE WIRES DOWN TO THE TRAY.

Re: DATA CENTER UNDER FLOOR WIRING

First please turn off the CAPS. Short answer' you cannot install feeders in open cable tray. 645.5(D) list the leniencies allowed for branch circuit conductors. But you better read 645.2 to see if you qualify, not many people will meet it or want to.
