Assuming Solar is involved, Art 690.31(G) and Art 358 to start with.

690.31 (G) applies to the inside of buildings, not outside.

690.31 in general covers anything specific to PV wiring methods. Aside from 690.4(B) there is really nothing special not covered in 358.

Admittedly I'm working from a "draft copy" but the header I see is:
(G) Direct-Current Photovoltaic Source and DC Out-put put Circuits On or Inside a Building and it requires marking among other things.

Did it change on the published copy ?

2014 Published copy

(G) Direct-Current Photovoltaic Source and Direct-
Current Output Circuits on or Inside a Building.

My mistake, I don't have the book in front of me. I knew that 690.31(E) was renumbered to 690.31(G) but did not realize the scope had been changed. 2011 NEC does not say 'on' so it does depend on your code cycle.

At any rate we have mentioned the code sections that apply to the OP's question.
