Yes, I agree with your words, however, the OP is asking about the white wire in a 14/3 cable.

There are TWO rules that need to be considered, and the OP is asking about the other rule.

Again, Gerard, what edition of the NEC are you working from ? ?
I was basically explaining whey dead end three way can be run with 14-3 and doesn't necessarily require 14-4.

Gerard, the important words in the NEC state that the re-identified conductor, in a cable switch loop, shall not be used as the return conductor from the switch to the (lighting) outlet.

Two travelers and a common conductor, when the common conductor is re-identified supplying this dead-end three-way, is a supply conductor for the switch, even if it came from the junction box that the luminaire is mounted to. Perfectly Code compliant. 200.7
Let's see if I understand what you are indicating, box 1 has feed from CB and line to light, box 2 is dead end box, 14/3 jump between B1 and B2, now the reidentified neutral on 14/3 ties to "hot" from CB then goes to common terminal of 3way in B2, now the red and black jumpers carry current back to B1 3way and the fixture line black attaches to common on B1 and of course CB neutral ties to fixture line neutral in B1. Is this what you are trying to indicate by highlighting the word supply conductor.

Yup.

I have the luxury of not worrying about my guys making mistakes, as I am the only one running the rope. I take advantage of the layout of the framing and the wiring design and I like playing the game of minimizing the holes drilled and the length of wire run. I, selfishly, don't wire for the next guy.

and you'd be right kwired
14-4 is a convenience where we can bounce the feed along a lighting circuit ,along with two travelers
it sounds funny, but it amounts to less wire ......
