Would someone assist me in finding the definition of "Temporary" as in temporary electrical service. Where in the NEC code book would I find this? What is the maximum number of days can an electrical service be considered temporary before becoming permanent?

Thanks

Anecdote time: You may have heard of the play "The Mousetrap" which has been running in London since 1952. The stage lights are wired using the normal methods for wiring stage lights, using flexible cords etc.

A few years ago an inspector raised the issue that an installation operating for decades couldn't really be classed as temporary, and would they mind rewiring as a permanent installation please. A compromise was reached: The theatre would completely undo the temporary installation every six months and put it back up again.

That depends on what you're using it for. 90 days or the term of consturction per the NEC or when we issure a TCO it's 30 days per our local ordinance, but it's not really temporary as we have the complete all of the electrical prior to the release of a meter.

Thanks You All, for responding to my inquiry. I NEC 590 has clarified the issue for me.

Locally it is 90 days, until you renew your permit for the next 90, and so on. I have had some temp services going for many years. (Yes the jobs take that long....)

Where are we getting 90 days from, is that a local thing? 590.3(A) says that it can be temporary for the duration of the job regardless of a time schedule.

Many years ago I had read an article quoting the number of lamps replaced, mile of shirts ironed, etc and I seem to recall that the set has been rebuilt a half dozen times or so. That might mitigate against classifying it as "permanent".

While at Stevens Institute of Technology, I attended classes in the world's oldest "temporary" building. Navy Building was constructed during WW I for the express purpose of training naval officers. They finally tore it down about 1984, I think.

Thought so, what do you do on a 2 year project?

Actually I messed up, 90 days is the limit for permit extentions.

Temporary structures or uses are permitted for up to 180 days and may be extended by the building official. (IBC section 107)

Thats what I get for posting from memory.:)
