Bidding a very large site job where there are at least 40 different structures being fed underground. It's A LOT of duct banks and large wire. Probably a lot of money in copper. Not sure if it has to be turned over to owner. GC wrote an RFI asking if all underground utilities can be abandoned in place. They replied they must all be removed in their entirety.

1. Would you actually estimate time to remove all those conductors from all the conduits? Asking because would that be what you would do if you got the job?
2. Would you just disconnect and safe off and let GC remove all utilities as they are digging up ground in all the areas? But then how would you handle being able to get the copper?

Well I believe he will demo. because the conduits all have to be removed as well. so in my mind there a few options.
1. We pull out the conductors and he digs up the conduits.
2. He digs up all conduits with wire still in once disconnected and safed off by us.

Yep. Lots of details to go over on a project. I’ll usually nail down a lot of those specifics at the pre-bid. I attend a lot of pre-bids, even as a sub-contractor.

After it’s awarded we’ll have a pre-construction meeting hammering out details. But bigger issues should be ironed out before you submit a bid.

For example, in my bids for the Division 26 SOW, I commonly have 2 numbers, first is all D26 work with trenching and backfilling excluded, and second is for me to perform the trenching, sand bedding, backfill, and compaction. Most of the time the GC has his own equipment on site already, so they opt to do it.

In your case, I would submit a bid with demo included, and excluded. Your inclusion only has to say, “removal and disposal of all underground and above ground existing electrical conduits, wiring and equipment, as per demo plans dated xxx”, or something like that. What you do with the materials is irrelevant to them, your quote is for removal and disposal.

Honestly the money made on recycling isn’t all that much compared to PW labor rates, so it’s not a make or break issue.

I just performed a court ordered abatement/property cleanup and disposed of 42,000 lbs of waste. Of that about half was recyclable. I made about $700, which wasn’t spit on the wing of a mosquito compared to what I charged the County to have trucks and equipment and personnel on site for nearly two weeks.
 
So if the mess hall was being completely demo'ed and they want the feeder feeding it demo'ed but the distribution equipment feeding the mess hall was to remain would there be any need to disconnect at the mess hall or only @ the gear feeding it? Could you just tag the feeders @ the mess hall end?

Also, curious what would you do at the 400A breaker side when disconnecting and safeing off? Curious what's involved..e.g just removing conductor from terminals etc. Thanks
