In wiring a detached garage from the service of a residential home, does the rating of the feeder disconnecting means have to correspond to 15,30 or 60 amps, or can I have one that is in line with the load calculation. Also can I use a panel at the garage with 6 breakers for the branch circuits as my disconnting means without a main disconnect? Thanks

Re: detached garages

230.79 (Service Ratings) doesn't apply to the garage, because it's not a service, it's a outside feeder or a seperate building or structure.

The 6-handle rule applies only to your service at the house. The garage doesn't have a service, it has a panel. 42 handle rule. :)

Re: detached garages

225.33 Maximum Number of Disconnects.

Up to six is permitted.

225.39 Rating of Disconnect.

Read A- minimum rating of 15 amperes, B- 2 circuit minimum of 30 amperes , C- One- family 100 amperes, and D- all others 60 amperes.
