Is there a code that states you cannot use a cut-in or remodel box in a currently under construction new building? If so, what article is it.

Thanks, Brandon

Don't use them in a fire rated wall.
It will violate the UL listing of the fire wall.
The boxes must be attached to a framing member.

Are you installing the boxes before or after the wall is finished?

Brandon, look at 320.30(D)(1), 330.20(D)(1), 334.30(B)(1), etc..., (cable articles) an inspector could have an issue with fishing conductors in an "unfinished" building.

I am on a remodel of an office building that has yet to ever be occupied. Many cut in boxes have been added. Why should this matter as long as done within code.Often i wonder if they would not save money by calling in the electrician after building is drywalled. They never seem to know what or where anything will go till its finished anyways

Jim, it wouldn't matter if it's done within code.

New ,old, commercial or residential i see no code to say i cant add as needed.

Did you read the articles I posted? If the building has been finished (C.O. issued for instance) you can fish cables, if it hasn't, an inspector would actually be able to cite a violation if you were fishing cables.

He might technically be able to, but they don't. Shear assemblies are normally complete when the sparky comes to ruff.

How about the rest of that article/s..[I only picked the one (330.20(D)(1)]:
Is fished between access points through concealed spaces in finished buildings or structures and supporting is impracticable

Celtic, that is the point, the inspector can cite the violation.

In an "unfinished" building there is no reason not to install the "rough in cables" with proper support before the wall covering is installed, in otherwords it would be practical.

If I were an inspector and wanted to tag the installation, I would state that a building under construction is not finished until a C.O. is issued.

Roger

I will begrudgingly agree with you Roger...but you would have to a pretty hard-nosed inspector to cite someone for that.

Celtic, I agree. I know we always have to add devices by fishing cables before a job is finished.

Roper1g, pointed out in a PM that article 348 (FMC) doesn't contain the wording "finished building" so we do have a way out.
