Device vs. Mudring

Looking for a little configuration help.
I recently had a project where the 2 gang mudrings would not support a GFI and A Low-voltage keypad even though the LV seperator fit fine. What happened was in a Bath room where the owner did not want 2 seperate box's for 1 GFI and a Lutron Keypad (highend resi). So What is the proper NEMA configuration for the width of a 2 gang mudring? top to bottom was no problem. side to side or width would not work as the stamped sides of the mudring seemed to be impinging on the corners by about a 1/16"?
Very confusing at the moment as to wether manufacturers are slipping from the device side or the steel side.
Now do this in a 2 gang plastic box and there is no problem?
Any help is appreciated.

I can't offer any help, but I have had the same problem. I installed an annunciator station that was meant to fit in a two gang box, however, it would not fit in a 4 sq. w/ a 2g mudring on it. :-? I had to gang 2 sing boxes together and cut it in.

that's what i did after finding out the hard way its impossible to fit two lutron dimmers side-by-side in a two-gang mudring.


If I know before hand what device will be in the box, i'll just use gangable's w/ 1/2" KO's
