Diesel Generator a mean of secondary containment

We have a project and fire protection inspector asks for a mean of secondary of containment for our generator. What does he mean?

Does this mean the generator tank need to be double wall type or... Or Generator manufacturer has to provide something that hold the diesel spill ?

A containment for if a tank or line ruptures.
 
Agreeing with mark, I've had to move a 40'x15' generator enclosure 12" after it was installed and tied in so they could pour a small wall around it and seal it. My only question was how does the water get out when it pours. My Gen has a moat, what does yours have?

The secondary(spill) containment means should accomodate 120% of the maximum available fluid volume. If it is located outdoors where rainwater may collect the means of regular inspaction of water and removal shgall be provided. (Usually a sloping floor and sump in one corner.) If this is a remote or unattended location you may want to install a level switch to alarm at an attended location.

Some generators with integral tank do have the containment provision built in.
 
Generator should be located inside a secondary containment and should accomodate at least 120% of the maximum available generator fluids volume (diesel, oil, etc). Diesel piping and tanks outside generator secondary containment (not inside in any secondary containment) should be double wall piping. A sump pit could be installed inside secondary containment with an end valve and/or sump pump to drain the secondary containment. Spill detectors can also be installed.

I think these are reasonable questions that the inspector should not have a problem in answering.

I hate those things! I'm always tripping on the darn things! :D

Dykes..or Containment walls are becoming more and more prevalent in new installs.....some by Fire Code....some by Building Codes.... all I know is they are ankle twisters when your carrying a 135lbs battery and forget they're there!
 
I think this has to do with double wall fuel tank, UL 142 list.
IFC chapter 34 also has rule on certain vent length. Thanks!
