Never heard of doing this, but I imagine the ballast would have to be a dimmable ballast to work with the dimmer.

IMO this is a stupid idea

edit: put a dark shade on it

Once again I bring up a point that I made in another thread....

Instead of wasting time calling something stupid or asking why, offer up some advice as to how to accomplish the task.

Customers ask for some strange or unorthodox things, it is our job to make it happen if it can be done safely and in a Code-Compliant manner.

That said, check out Lutron's website as they specialize in lighting control. I think they do have a controller in the Grafik Eye line that can handle metal halide, and IIRC the fixture does not need a special ballast. I do know they can control magnetic low voltage and neon easily.

A site search turned up an electronic switch that can handle metal halide, but no mention of dimming. Contact Lutron's tech support, they may have a better answer than what comes up on the web pages.

I'm working with some MH fixtures now that are dimmable. They use 0-10 volt dimming controls.

Now I'm curious too..what brand are the fixtures and what brand control are you using?

We don't have the fixtures yet. So far we've just run the conduit. One for power, a separate one for the 0-10 volt control signal. I'll see if I can get more info.

The dimmers are ETC Unison Legacy modules.
