When is a dimmer switch, occupancy and ambient sensors required? Is this a requirement of the local/state energy code or is this strictly a design decision based on the client specifications?

Usually a requirement at a state level or at some kind of code adoption level (could be local).

You could have a requirement from certain companies that like to boast about efficiency or green initiatives.

There is also some cost savings in there for a long term application but typically a larger upfront cost. Some times people will specify LED with sunlight dimmers or additional windows to offset lighting loads. Just depends.

It’s called “light harvesting” when used with light sensors. Some utilities give rebates, other is state or local requirements. Large corporations usually want a two year payboff when doing upgrades.
