The homeowner of the house I'm currently doing wants some switched plugs on dimmers. I told him it wasn't a good idea and that it may be against code, however later I got looking and couldn't find anything prohibiting this. Did I miss it?

Re: Dimming a receptacle

iwire,
I just a book in the mail today (Residential Pocket Guide to Electrical Installations 2005)..as I thumbed through it, I saw that Article and folded the page....must be a very common (bad) idea to dim a recept.

Re: Dimming a receptacle

Celtic if your customer insists on this and you want to make them happy there are dimmers that use special receptacles that are 'listed for the purpose' of dimming plug and cord connected lamps

I have not used them but apparently you change out the plug on the lamp to be dimmed, install the new type matching receptacle connecting that to the dimmer.

I think Leviton makes this, maybe others also.

Re: Dimming a receptacle

I actually haven't run across a customer that wants a dimmed recept....but if and when the times comes, I'll take your advice (and make a sale) or suggest that get a floor lamp (torchiere?) that has a dimmable foot switch like the one I have in my LR (... for when the room is not lit-up like Giants Stadium with the dozen hi-hats I slapped in:D...and maybe sell that!)

Re: Dimming a receptacle

I have done many high end homes that wanted to dim plant shelf receptacles.Told the C/M no way but can supply a dimmed J box hard wired to lighting system. No problem as far as i can see
