I'm confused. :confused: Why would a 120 volt machine need a 3-pole disconnect? But to answer (what I think is) your question, you cannot switch the neutral. Yes, 404.2(B) applies.

The exception to 404.2(B) will permit the grounded conductor to be opened by the disconnect.

its not unusual to see a 120V device with a three pole disconnect. you just don't use all the poles.

I might be inclined to wire the neutral through the disconnect in such a case.

I wouldn't; I'd take the 3-phase switch and replace it with a single-pole one, and keep the 3-pole one for when I need it.
