I have got a job hooking up (4) thermostatically controlled attic fans in a church attic. The unit is only servicable from the roof, but the thermo and j-box is obviousley located in the attic. The units exceed 300VA, would this fall under the heading of a permanently connected appliance? My concern is someone servicing the unit from the roof could have it start up while they had their hand in the impeller. Am I over thinking this, is it simply the responsibility of the person working on it to make sure the power is off in the first place?

Article 430.102 (A)and(B) require a disconnect for the thermostat controllers and if not within site of the motor, a disconnect for the motors is required. If the rooftop fans are large enough to service, there should be a disconnect at the unit.The disconnect can be a toggle switch, and possibly a cord and plug.

I have one of these on my roof. No sure how they hooked it up. I know they took power from one of my bedroom circuits for it.
