Hello,

Someone has put a gas meter directly below where we are installing disonnects for HVAC equipment. Is this acceptable or is there a distance requirement between the gas meter and the disconnects?

Thank you!

I know of no NEC violation as far as the proximity of the two, however, if is diredtly below it would be a violation of 110.26(A)(3).

Check with NFPA 54, "National Fuel Gas Code" for the clearance requirements. You will find the three foot requirement from the meter to spark producing equipment in Section 5.7.2.3, "Gas meters shall be located at least 3 ft. (0.9 m) from sources of ignition."

We have the same requirements from our meter to the gas meter although we do not consider our meter a spark producing device unless someone is pulling it from the socket.

Ditto, and also see NEC Art. 110-26 (from what you're describing it sounds like you wouldn't meet 110-26).
