Rick, if two appliances each have instructions that demand a dedicated circuit, and they share a circuit but are wired so that they cannot both be connected simultaneously (with a three-way switch, or contactors, or some other cut-out arrangement), would this still be a violation?

I'm asking in the same spirit as JohnE: genuinely curious how you'd see it.

My guess: it's a violation of the letter, if not the spirit, of the NEC, which is exactly where the AHJ's discretion becomes everything.

They still make units with a mechanical timer, they will resume where they were left off when power is interrupted.

Most consumers want all the bells and whistles though, so the place you see the simple timer units the most is in apartments or other rental spaces because they are usually less cost.

Also more reliable. One power surge and you need a new board which can rival the cost of replacement if it's out of warranty.

Yep. Had a front load clothes washer, no longer under warranty would no longer spin. Couple less expensive parts were possible reasons - door latch switch, was one of them, I forget the other. Neither fixed the problem, next on the check list was a control board for the motor - and it was high enough we figured a new washer was a better buy - and it would at least have a warranty.

Since only one appliance could be used at a time the circuit is dedicated to that appliance at the time of use. I would see this as code compliant.
