disposal and light

An inspector failed several of our houses for having the disposal and one can light above the sink (2 switches in same location) on the same circuit. His reason being that you can't have a motor and lighting on the same circuit. Can anyone give me a code reference for this? Why wouldn't blower motors under fireplaces or ceiling fans or even bath fans be considered a motor as well?

Re: disposal and light

IMO unless the disposal is very large the inspector is mistaken.

210.23(A) 15- and 20-Ampere Branch Circuits. A 15- or 20-ampere branch circuit shall be permitted to supply lighting units or other utilization equipment, or a combination of both, and shall comply with 210.23(A)(1) and (A)(2).

210.23(A)(2) Utilization Equipment Fastened in Place. The total rating of utilization equipment fastened in place, other than luminaires (lighting fixtures), shall not exceed 50 percent of the branch-circuit ampere rating where lighting units, cord-and-plug-connected utilization equipment not fastened in place, or both, are also supplied.

Re: disposal and light

Maybe 210.23(A)(2)? What is the branch circuit overcurrent rating, and what is the nameplate full load current of the disposal?

Re: disposal and light

Back before I knew the code well enough to stand my ground, I had an inspector that wanted me to increase the disposal circuit from a 15A to a 20A cause the homeowner might install a bigger disposal than what the developer was supplying at the roughin.

Re: disposal and light

Your inspector is wrong as Bob and Al have pointed out.

It's not the greatest design, because the light can possibly dim when the disposal is used, but that doesn't violate Code.

Re: disposal and light

Now that you know the answer please do not be affraid to point this out to the inspector. They are human and can stand to learn something new sometimes.
