Does the NEC cover proper distance BETWEEN bus bars located inside switchgear (panelboards and service entrance equipment)? Also, distance from the bars to the door of the enclosure? Other than 110.31 which refers us to the NESC, I can't find anything. I'm looking for an article that makes a provision to help eliminate the possiblility of arcing. Help.

Re: distance between copper bussing in switchgear

Bus bar spacing is specified in various product standards, primarily the ANSI/NEMA/IEEE C37, NEMA PB & SG series. Depending on the class of equipment, UL may also have developed their own applicable product standards. UL commonly uses the IEEE and NEMA standards as the basis for their own.

If the equipment has NRTL certification (very likely) and has not been field modified, it is probably acceptable.

The NEC does not cover the manufacture of "factory built" equipment it only covers the installation, see 90.2. It defers to other organizations such as NEMA, ANSI, and UL, see 90.7.
