California has its own version of the electrical code. Each time the NEC is published, they mark it up, deleting, revising, or adding text, to suit their preferences. Other jurisdictions do the same (I know Seattle is one of them). Do you have a copy of the California Electrical Code? If not, you probably should buy one. It may or may not have the answer to your specific question. But as I understand things, the NEC does not apply in California. It has been superseded in its entirety by the California Electrical Code.
