Distance between gas and electric

Is there a code that states that there must be a minimum distance of 36 inches between a gas meter and a meter/main or distribution panel? Thanks for anything you can contribute.

I don't recall an NEC requirement but here in NJ one of our local POCO's requires the 36" that you've mentioned.

Here it is 36 in from source of possible ignition.But that only pertains to meter vent.I have seen meters encroach that distance and the gas company extended their vent in pipe and it passed.If there is a meter distance in affect then why wouldn`t their be the same restrictions on drops off gas service :confused: IE: dryer,stove,wh,oven ...........

Thanks Infinity, I'm also from NJ originally, but in California now and that's where I'm being held to this "code issue?" The inspector will not pass me until I rectify it.

California has its own version of the electrical code. Each time the NEC is published, they mark it up, deleting, revising, or adding text, to suit their preferences. Other jurisdictions do the same (I know Seattle is one of them). Do you have a copy of the California Electrical Code? If not, you probably should buy one. It may or may not have the answer to your specific question. But as I understand things, the NEC does not apply in California. It has been superseded in its entirety by the California Electrical Code.

Stew, it's a gas company thing, that's about as much as I know. They think PVC and meters could spark, so we have to avoid them.
