Do you always "call before you dig"?

You are right, I saw the bubbling, got excited.

it happens... bubbling is exciting.....:p

specially after you drive a ground rod. :dunce:

i've got some grounding to do, and some
trenching on this patch of ground, and here's
where they are currently doing some
oil line relocation......

this plot of land is right up the street from THUMBS terminal.....

Texaco, Humble, Union, Mobil, BP, Shell..... for those of you
who aren't from the area...

already driven ONE ground rod.....

"now did i drive FIVE or SIX ground rods? well, do you feel
lucky, punk? DO YOU?"

-with apologies to clint eastwood

all kidding aside, if i have to ground something here, i'm putting
25' of bare 4/0 copper in the ditch, and calling it good. no way in
hell i'm driving ground rods here....

if i ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY had to sink a ground rod, i'd get
a potholing service to sink a 10' hole with a hydrojet, and i'd
drop in a chemical ground and grout it. this piece of land has
80 years of stuff buried in it.

Yup, I once knew a contractor who called digger's hotling before digging cutting a line htat singlephase a sewerage treatment plant frying (3) 200hp motors. It ended up to be that diggers hotline was not updated on the underground line. As such, athough digger's hotline is commonly a trusted sourse it wasn't 100% in this case.

Though I commend the contractor for calling like he was supposed to, it certainly was not his fault for damage to the motors, proper overload protection apparently wasn't being used. Many other possibilities could have caused single phasing of those motors.

Now, the rest of the story. All on the starters were equipped with my systems voltage monitor to open the starter when single phasing is detected. When I was called by the contractor I went to the job sight first along with my distributor and found that the nobody had configured the SVM in the first place. I attended a meeting with a city comptroller, electrical contractor, as well as a rep from the power company where their intent was to assign fault for the costs. The city comptroller accepted a portion because his engineer hadn't addressed the SVM settings, the contractors accepted a portion as well as the power company and the they looked for me for my contribution. I replied that my product was perfectly fine and if someone would have taken the time to set them there would have been no damage.
Even though it was somewhat of a stressful meeting the never contested my response.

I take it you sold them but did not install them, otherwise why wouldn't you have set them?

Add: Or you were the one who specified them.
