Sharpies would not be compliant with the new wording for identification.
The sharpie may say permanent on the label, but it is not suitable for the environment in which these disconnects are located.
You can usually erase sharpie with a whiteboard marker fyi.

We get those little plastic squares carved out at the trophy shop. They cost about 4$ ea.

I don't know what they're called, but they use an etching thing to take off the top 1/32nd of an inch so the white shows up. (we get white on black, like this: )

Sharpie would at least stay on there. Those little plastic etched labels need to be glued on with something i haven't tried yet. Epoxy maybe or they just fall off. Paint and stencil is a super idea.

Our shop provides some sort of dual-sided sticky stuff that holds them on for decades. Gotta be careful when you stick them on to make sure they are exactly where you want them.

Looks like the conduit pulled the hilti pin right out of the wall - glad we cant use PVC above ground here. Sure metal expands and contracts but not that much. And wouldn't the building settle more than the earth around the building? Or was the frost heave?

You guys are all wrong. The problem is that the trough and disconnects were mounted too high.

1/2" rigid 1H fits 1/2" PVC
According to my bender, I should use 3/4" EMT straps for 1/2" rigid.

The self stick on Phenolic labels will work and stay put if you clean the surface with Isopropyl alcohol first. It's less then a $1.00 and one bottle will last a long time.

Looks like the trough is too small. If those are 1.25" conduits, then it needs to be 10" tall, if the conduits are 1.5" then the trough needs to be 12" tall.

Only if the conductors are #4 or larger. 314.28(A)

That's the only type of alcohol that would last long in my truck! That's why I became an inspector :D

(joking, I'm actually a non-drinker..but figured you anti-inspector guys would appreciate the thought)

on a serious note, something to be noted here. We discussed the use of "kindorf" straps on the PVC and the fact that in some areas they were not accepted as they don't allow for movement. My first thought was "they must have allowed for movement here" since we have the gap. Then I noticed what ptonsparkey had spotted in that the contraction had ripped the strut supports from the wall (although they looked like poor support).
Everyone else may have noticed that, but I thought I would bring it to the attention of some of the "newer" readers who might question why particular straps are required for PVC runs.

Pierre, How often do you enforce 300.5(J)? Does that apply only if movement is expected such as if concrete encased, no movement, if not concrete encased, then it can be expected to settle if not tamped.

The black taped item between the disconnects are several linesets that go to remote A/C units.
The disconnects supply those same A/C units. Can you guess which one would serve which A/C unit?

I don't see any a/c units, therefore they are not within sight, therefore a violation.

On another front... Pierre what can you do about this installation? You weren't there to inspect it. So you must ignore it.

How about identification of the 3 disconnects? If you were to identify them, what product/method would you use?

Yellow crayon on a kitchen napkin... just to complete the picture...
