The dog chewed the outer covering of the SEC for about three feet. The guy is selling the house and there was a home inspection. You can guess the rest. He wants to avoid replacing the entire cable. Is there some way to repair this?

put the damaged section inside of a gutter and splice in a new chunk.

Depends.

Does 'is selling' mean there is a buyer, or does it mean the owner plans to sell it with no buyer yet?

Also, I wonder, what happened to the dog??

Yes, there is a buyer. This came up with the home inspection. Something needs to be done. The conductors are exposed on the weather side. They are exposed to the sun and elements. Eventually, there will be a problem. Since this is the poco's cable, I believe he will need to pay them to replace it.

Is the damage limited to the outer cover only (the jacket)? If it is how about using a shrink tube around the jacket?

There is a listed product that can be brushed on insulated cables that complies with restoring their insulated rating. :happyyes: Might be able to use it. :) AND just for looks put duct tape over the whole "repair". :D

3M Scothkote might be the name for it.

Although you guys are probably correct I don't see any mention of se cable but rather sec. service entrance conductors. So I will ask "Are these conductors in PVC"? or is it se cable and then I ditto BOB and add why is it 3' off the ground.

"chewed off the outer covering" seems to indicate it is SE cable.

What is subject to physical damage? --- will never be a consensus unless NEC would make it very clear with some kind of definition. Take away the dog in this installation and it likely is never subject to physical damage. Run it in RMC and it may be safe from the dog, but what if the homeowner decides to get a 2000 pound bull instead of a dog?

I agreed that it was probably se cable but I don't know if the dog chewed thru the conduit also. The only reason I said that was because I have never seen a power company wire run in se cable and at 3'

3' in the OP was how much length of cable had damaged covering, not distance from grade or anything like that.

Distance permitted from grade still is subject to discretion as well as consideration of what may or may not be subjected to physical damage and is nothing definite in the NEC.

Well then it is one tall puppy if the cable is coming out of the meter. I am starting to think this is an se cable to the panel. not a power company cable.

That is what I figured it was from the beginning - meter to panel cable. OP did not say how high off the ground it is, or if it is vertical or horizontal run at the point of damage, just that three feet of cable was damaged.

se cable

se cable

Sorry for not being clear. This is a service entrance cable running from point of attachment to the meter. The cable runs down the side of the house and just above the floor of a deck for several feet before making a downward turn to the meter under the deck. It appears the deck was added on to the side of the house recently. The dog chewed on the cable exposing the conductors inside.

Around here the POCO provides the cable from the POA to the meter. The homeowner contacted the POCO and they have set up a work order.

Here, the POCO will not allow a J-box in their run. They don't even like LB's as they don't want anywhere that you could tap into their conductors. I would check with them before installing a J-box.
