In my opinion it would be, but a hardwired version does not exist yet. Seems like this is something some progressive company like Arlington or Wiremold ought to jump all over. The device in this post is UL listed the same way that your computer power are strips, for instance. If they came up with a hardwired one, then that would be a real receptacle.

I believe there is one and I will try and find it. I rememeber it from the forum but my mind ain't much good no more.;)

default.aspx

I believe this one is hard wired but I cannot find anymore info on it. Apparently it is a Legrand/wiremold product.

I can't find it on there site- need to look more.

Here is the link where I found it http://marketplace.hgtvpro.com/Product.aspx?Lid=1886-HGP611103

I just noticed that the one's with the whip are dual power and communications versions. They're pretty big. The power only one's are all cord and plug versions. I guess this one is out too, unless your customer also wanted phone and data on their island counter.

I don't think so-- seems like they are two distinct units. Look at the design options on that page. Field installed configurations.

They're functionally no different than plugging in an extension cord someplace, laying it on the island, and attempting to call it the "required receptacle".
Would it be acceptable if it were hardwired?

Yeah, but both of those part numbers say that they have a 12 foot cord .

I see that but in the beginning under benefits it says
"Installation flexibility.
Flush Unit is plug-ended or
can be field-configured and installed on-site."

I am assuming that means it can be direct wired.

The KP-2345 appears to be cord only.

Yeah, at least it's confusing. I think the people at Wiremold don't really understand how important this is to us electricians. I think they're missing the boat a little bit by not marketing these in other ways besides for conference tables.

they do come in just a duplex with a factory whip. I ordered one as a sample to show to my gc who had a flat countertop with a sink a little off center but the walls on both sides were further than 24" and the overhang was 12". the upper cabinets were 32" from countertop to the bottom. seemed like a logical choice they will even custom paint the top covers for you if you order a certian number of them. the problem i ran across is the fact that the whip acts as a counter balance to open the outlet so it needs to be able to swing pretty freely in order to open the lid nicely. seemed to be a service call in the making. also he wasnt too keen on cutting into the granite countertop in about 15 units. after this the 12" over hang is going to have to go. they ended up having to build out the supporting edge of the base 6" to give me my code required outlets.

I believe it was the kp9999. The process I went through was my supplier who had me call wire mold tech support. I told them what was happening and the quantities I would possibly need. Asked them about colors, they then told me about custom coloring (there was a minimum amount to purchase) if I sent them a sample of the color I requested. They shipped me out a sample in black with a mc lead already attached. It also came with the template and the brackets to hold the outlet into the counter top. They also forewarned me about the opening mechanism. All in all they were very helpful.
