Hey, what residential range doesn't use a neutral? It was permitted to run 8-3WO back in the day but any new range I have wired takes a least an 8-3 with ground.
 
Old range and panel change???? Most should you're right though.... I still get appliance guys showing up with 3-wire cord for ranges and dryers for new equipment.... :mad:

Some of the newer units don't use a neutral. Two hots and a ground. I just wired one that was A Wolf Range (if my memory is right).

I see electric cooktops all the time that do not need a neutral, but I don't recall ever seeing a range that didn't.

Not disputing Dennis, I just haven't seen one yet.

I think the same jokers showed up to one of my jobs recently. They attached the 4sq. cover to the box with sheet rock screws. Then disconnected the flex 90 off the furnace so they could put it on a built in oven. I just love it when a GC pays someone to do work that I have included in my bid and they don't know a code book from the drivers hand book. If they just bring the oven in the building we will take it from there.
