Downsizing a 100A main service disconnect?

Of course it is, but it seems the inspector has interpreted it as Don has so we are kind of wasting our time on it.

IWIRE ,
Please don't pull my point out of context. That comment was regarding center feed and opposite ends of the buss, NOT weather or not the panel is rated at 125a

If the buss is rated at 125 the inspector , all knowing electrical engineer , all mighty has nothing to stand by. Anything short of a current city ordinance and filed with the state building standards , this guy is nueissance and should be treated as such.

Wow you must be an expert above all other experts,

Not saying you don?t know what you?re talking about but this nuisance inspects more than just this system, And if guys like Don and others look at it the same way he might just be trying to do his job.

I've seen this crap before. inspectors that think they can do what they want. In the State of CA. an inspector cannot make up the rules as he see fit. If the local agency does not file an ammendment he is out of line. Just as was another inspector recently who wrote a memorandum disallowing Zinsco in a PV install and not calling out any code substantiation.

I did not pull it out of context at all.

I was speaking of the center feed issue.

Perhaps, IF the the bus is rated 125, I don't know that it is and neither do you.

OP says that BOTH are 100A, "The main service panel (msp) is a 100 A rated with a 100A main service disconnect."

My Q: could it still be 125 A bussing?

Where is here?

The Bay Area. Including San Francisco and a bunch of the older suburbs with older homes. Not only do I see 100A rated busbars, but I also see 60A pull out fuse holders and the like. Never know what I'll find. Many of the 100A panels (not all) are MLO panels with the main installed as a 'backfed' breaker.

A month or so ago I installed 20A of solar on a 100A panel with a 70A main breaker, and had precisely the conversation we are having with the inspector about how I was allowed to put the solar breaker wherever I wanted.

I really cannot recall any panels that are 100 amp only rated.

I totally believe that one could be hard-pressed to source a new main-breaker service panel with a 100A bus (and why would one want to?). But finding such a thing in older homes, that's commonplace for me.

I think the inspector's interpretation of the code is perfectly valid, although it's usually overkill from a safety point of view, in my opinion, and I'm glad I haven't had to deal with such an AHJ yet.
