Downsizing a neutral

I was wondering if I could get some advice. I have a job with a 2000 amp 480/277 volt service, CT main circuit breaker in section 1 and distribution in section 2. They want to add a 2000 amp transfer switch, I have already talked to the manufactor of the switch gear about breaking out the bus and supplying details for me. My question is, if I have a three pole ATS and run 5 sets of of conductors in and out of the ATS for the phases, do I need to run the neutral in and out of the ATS or can I just leave the neutral buss in the gear an run 600 amps worth of neutral from the ATS to the distribution since it is only a 350 kw generator with a 600 amp overcurrent device.

Any advice would be appreciated.

CIECO, A 277/480vac 2000a service will have GFP installed, this normally

leads to using a four pole ATS that switches the neutral.

There are countless above 1000 amp 480/277 services with GFP that utilize 3 Pole ATS's and while not my preferred method. It can be done.

I'm not sure if what you are proposing would violate 300.20 or not. I would suggest that you at least read through that paragarph.
