Miami Dade county still enforces 230.8/300.5(G). I work mostly in Broward county where it is not enforced do to the fact duct seal doesn't seem to work as intended. I'm wondering what you people do in the other parts of the US.

My choice. I don't honestly know if it's enforced or not. If it is, I pass. :D Chico is the crap they send with seal-off fittings.
 
For 230.8 I use duct seal, for 300.5 (G) I like using expanding foam. I have had an inspector gig me for using silicon sealant for 300.5 (G) on a walk in cooler once, he said it was not "removable" so therefore by his determination not allowed. That was the only thing between me and a final on a new resturant so I promptly "removed" it and substituted duct seal.

is there a requirement for how far above the cooler that the duct seal can be used?

Can you even be around to put a hitli conduit collar, Or bump or build
a 2" curb, Most cases I would assume thats it a PVC or Rigid, or even EMT stubs, but if we use core hole, Rock wool filler and a 2" concrete fill-finish.

You might also check the UL Listings for such...

So much for silicon for not being removeable.



Note:
I saw how you spelled removable and how I spelled removeable. So I looked it up in the dictionary...Websters has it spelled both ways...:cool:

Chico is the Crouse-Hinds brand of sealing compound used in sealoffs (classified location seals). It is a highly refinded grout type material (and no, you can't substitute grout for Chico). Once it sets up in the sealoff, it's like a concrete hard plug completely sealing around the wires and sealoff to keep vapors and fires/explosions from traveling through the conduit system.

I used to find duct seal in the peckerheads of 2300 volt motors. What a mess. I'm pretty sure it is not an application that it is listed for. Apparently it was widely used in "the good ol days". The journeyman I studied and suffered under hated it also and told me if I ever wanted to use it for that application I should aquire 3 pounds of it first. 1 pound for the motor and the other 2 pounds he would insert violently up my... I still hate the stuff.

The section is 300.7(A) and no there is no distance given.

You are simply required to stop air traveling from one temperature area to another with an 'approved' method.

I think they did this to keep moisture out. Hey Larry I've been censored for the first time. I figured you'ld be proud of me!

I think they were trying to keep moisture out. This was in a paper mill. Very wet enviroment. I wired up a lot of these motors over the years and never used duct seal and never had a connection fail. They did a lot of things in that mill that diidn't make much sense.
