Good point. I don't see any requirements for a duct smoke detector in a supply or a return duct for a single family dwelling in the IRC...so I don't think it's required. Am I overlooking any requirements on duct detectors in the IRC, if not I won't install one?For questions like this, you need to check the Scope section at the beginning of the codes. In this case, for the IMC, section 101.2, which has an exception to the scope for buildings subject to the IRC.

If you look in the IRC, smoke alarms are covered in section 314. There is no mention of smoke alarms or detectors in air handling equipment. Likewise, NFPA 72 doesn't mention duct smoke detectors in the context of residential occupancies. Survey says: not required.Good point.
