can a single 277v hot wire be run by itself in wire mold feed from a switch up to a emergency light about 3ft up then use a piece of mc cable out of a nearby light to feed the neutral to the emergancy light .i got a lienced electrian at work who removed a switch in the wall put a wiremold box on wall surface drilled half inch hole no gromit or bushing in it ran 1 277v wire up wiremold mounted a single gang wiremold box then adapted a 1900 box on top of that [no bushing]then mounted a light on that ..he ran a mc cable out of the 1900 box to a near by light not even in the wall just hanging in the air ..he says this is ok in the code book ..it looks like hell and in my eyes a against code 300.20 but im not sure about ex.320.20 is this against code ? thanks ......

NO, is the answer to your question, be it the ungrounded (hot) or grounded (the neutral for this conversation) conductor and the reason is inductive heating, this is even if it were not a code violation, which it is.
See 300.3(B) or better yet, tell this "licensed electrician" to read this article section.

For what it is worth, I agree with Roger. I wonder if this guy remembers anything from his apprenticeship or if he just knows how to make things work. :roll:

celtic thanks [neat and workman like manner ] this is one of his better jobs at least this one didnt blow up..i think..this is why there should be a hands on test with the book work. the guy cant even use basic hand tools .dont even ask about power tools its scary.........

Even with code aside, there is a safety problem as someone could think they turned off the circuit that the neutral is the return path for, and be electrocuted when they take the neutrals apart.

anyone want to hire a lienced electrian in n.j. I know of one who will be looking for a job real soon.. he also says he is an electrial engineer. he is great with tools - realy knows his code -works well with others .I'll give a great refernce just take him with you and promise not to bring him back ..no return policy you take ---you keep .....

While changing some outlets to GFI's on Friday, it got a bit late for me so I called it a day, telling the HO I would return on Monday.
I get there today, and the HO's son is changing an outlet I pulled a permit on! The son is an "EE". After watching the "act" for a little while, he goes to turn the power on...GFI is hot - but doesn't "trip". I diplomatically push the guy to the side, remove the GFI and watch as wires start falling off the recept. LOL. He had pigtailed some #16's to the GFI (amongst other things done incorrectly :roll: ).
I think you can keep your EC/EE!

I think i work with your "ee" 's cousin my guy spliced a hand full off 277v circuts in a box a few days later i open the box to finish a job he started [as always] im 16 ft in the air on top of a ladder open the box and all the wire nuts fall apart shorting out .I should have killed him i almost fell .hey if your in n.j maybe your looking for ''ee/ec''i got just the guy....
