Several years ago something happened and I always wondered if the guy was pulling my leg or not......What happened was a carpenter was using his sawzall and hit the GEC of an apartment bldg and form what I was told it tripped the 1000a main outside....It never made sense to me that cutting the gec would do that ....
 
If the sawzall was maybe double insulated and had an internal fault (or the ground prong was broken), and the main had ground fault protection, its possible that hitting the ground caused a fault ? (bad coordination) Don't think its likely, but its the only scenario I can think of ? (other than someone is lying)
 
I'd drill thru a 100 amp se cable with a 1" auger bit nothing happened to me but the bit melted and some stuff caught on fire briefly, scared the crap out of me.:D

I usually dont believe most stuff people say about electrical accidents, people tend to exaggerate, or just repeat some B.S. story someone else made up. My favorite, is when some moron talks about changing a receptacle in thier house and getting "BLOWN" across the room:roll:

i think the worst BS story i ever heard was some guy was plugging his dryer in, some how got 240 in his hand and it fried his cell phone in his pocket

I have, and I could imagine someone's own muscles contracting hard enough to move themselves a few feet in any random direction.

I heard of a guy who caught 483 between his fingers....but since it was fed from a zig zag open delta corner grounded wye he only felt 32.8 volts. :confused:
 
i enjoy listening to people explain a situation when they clearly have no clue about what happened. like the guy that was telling me about his new house. he was telling me he was going to run the service himself but he was going to have the utility hook it up. he said " i dont mind working with 110 220 or 330 but more than that scares me".
note to self watch out for that 330 itll get ya every time.:grin:

Yeah, my cutoff is 500 kV. Anything above that and I start being really careful!

It's because they scared the bejesus out of themselves - you could have clapped real loud for the same effect. A well timed "BOO!" could put most non-sparkies and sparkies alike on the ceiling.
 
My partner and I went on a service call one time to a grocery store. The owner said she was getting shocked by the coolers. We traced the problem to a broken neutral. What we didn't realize was almost all of the raceways had 120 volts on them. What happened next is funny now but pretty serious when it happened. My partner got behind a pinball machine to open a j-box on the incoming feed he bumped the conduit with the back of his hand, the shock caused his arm to convulse slapping himself in the face and his reflexes returned his hand to the conduit. Sounded like the rapid succession slaps in the old trinity movies. when he stumbled out from behind the machine he was a bloody mess. When we realized he wasn't badly hurt we had a good laugh
