SO long story short...I'm goin to replace the existing controls on a duplex compressor system, (one tank, two motors) alternating relay in-between. I see the Finder brand alternating relays and the Time Mark solid state stuff- my question is what's the best - I'd like to have my mechanics have the ability to switch off one side or the other for maintenance.

What are you guys using to control two motors in a duplex situation??

A duplex controller. Most motor control mfrs will build them for you if you just ask. Two starters and an alternator in a box, UL listed and ready to go.

Normally it's a little more specialized for compressor applications. The alternator is connected to transpose two pressure switches that are set at slightly different pressures. This allows both compressors to run during periods of high air demand.
I agree, a competent control manufacturer will know how to do this.
