With a metal box the EGC (if used) must be connected to the box. If you use a self-grounding receptacle a bonding jumper is not required. There are some other exceptions for different types of metal boxes and covers.

A wire type EGC is not required when the raceway qualifies as an EGC {250.118}

If a wire type EGC is present, it will require you bond that wire type EGC to the box.
