find knob and tuve wiring that is leaking 1/2 to 1 kilowatt into the woodwork.

How do we get that type of leakage from a 120/240 volt system into woodwork without starting a fire?

Check voltage, could be too high. I had same problem. I had higher than normal bill over a period of a year. Found problem one day when I noticed the service feed crimps were smoking. After electric company replace splice crimps, they checked voltage at meter. 150 volts to neutral !! They spent the next 3 days adjusting the regulators.
