I agree with Gus but a $12 dollar pull out is a very easy thing to install and avoids challenges. Personally I would want the disco at the heater for my own safety since I don't carry a lock with me. :smile:
 
2006 International Residential Code. Chapter 40APPLIANCE INSTALLATION, Table E4001.5 DISCONNECTING MEANS

That Table permits the branch circuit overcurrent device to serve as the disconnecting means where it is within sight of the appliance OR if the branch circuit overcurrent device is capable of being locked in the open position.

Any way you can quote it for those of us without a copy of the IRC?


Also, there can be local amendments requiring a disconnect - like Baltimore City. The WH can be 2' from the panel, and a disconnect is still required.
 
I once used a 2p 30a toggle switch for a customer who didn't want "the ugly grey box" in the utility room.
