There is a 2000 amp service over 6' wide. There is less than
36" working space in front of the switch but there is a double door that, when opened, meets the requierment. My question is: it this acceptable ?

We frequently do this for panelboards, but I've never seen it done with a 2000 amp switchboard.

I'm betting the door won't meet the headroom required by 110.26(E). All the 2000 amp switchboards I've ever seen were about 8' tall.

Good catch, Steve. So you will have to talk to the architect about putting in a taller door!

Hopefully the equipment is not taller than 80" which is what the IBC requires for a minimum headroom for means of egress doors.

Many of the double doors in my Plant have a removeable section above both doors

I haven't seen that before. But I think it still sounds kind of "iffy".

I don't think anyone would object to a standard door with the right height. But when you have to remove a transom panel, I'm not sure how that is any different from having something stored in front of a switchboard.

Some AHJ's would probably be OK with it, but others might not like it.

I have a similar feature designed into an area way leading into a transformer vault. But the purpose is to enable a transformer to be physically removed from the space, and a new transformer brought in. I don't take credit for that extra distance, for the purposes of working space.

That is the purpose for our doors to be installed that way.
