This is a clipping from a local newspaper in Alexandria Minnesota. How often we see the many extension cords laying loose on resort or private docks. Definitely an accident waiting to happen.

Three men suffer electric shock on L'Homme Dieu

07/05/2006

Three men suffered serious electric shock injuries Saturday night after a boat motor cut through a power cord on Lake L?Homme Dieu.

The Douglas County Sheriff?s Office and North Ambulance responded to the incident at 2442 County Road 120 just after 9 p.m.

They found three victims on the shore who had suffered an electric shock ? Steven Alan Bormann, 33, of Farmington, Dennis Lee Larson, 51, of Montevideo, and Nicholas Lee Bormann, 36, of Farmington.

Here?s what happened, according to the sheriff?s office:

Steven Bormann, along with three children, were approaching the dock at the Lake L?Homme Dieu residence in a small boat.

The boat?s motor struck a 110-volt electrical extension cord that was run underwater to a nearby dock.

When Steven Bormann was getting out of the boat, he touched the water and was knocked unconscious by a jolt of electricity. He fell face first and was submerged in about three feet of water.

Larson then attempted to enter the water to save Bormann and he also suffered an electric shock, became unconscious and submerged underwater.

Nicholas Bormann also entered the water while trying to rescue the others, and he, too, was knocked unconscious and was submerged underwater.

The power source was disconnected from a nearby outlet, allowing other family members to pull the victims out of the water.

CPR was performed by a witness on Steven Bormann before deputies arrived. North Ambulance transported him and Larson to the hospital.

Nicholas Bormann was taken to the hospital by a private vehicle.

As of Monday morning, Larson was listed in serious condition at the Douglas County Hospital.

Steven and Nicholas Bormann were both listed in good condition.

Very tragic. I have to wonder tho, the 1st. guy goes in gets shocked & slips under. The 2nd. guy goes in, gets shocked & slips under. What does the 3rd. guy think is going to happen to him? yet, he goes in.

Not everyone is familar with the cause of people who are slipping underwater... they may just think that they are drowning.
