I know the NEC does not require recessed lay-in fluorescent light fixtures to be independently supported from the ceiling grid. But does the NFPA 72 require recessed lay-in fluorescent light fixtures to be independently supported to the ceiling slab because of the fire rating of the ceiling tiles or safety reasons?

I would read art. 410.16 (C). The fixtures need to be attached to the grid and the grid attached to the ceiling.

I believe the reason is so the fixtures don't fall out the ceiling. I also think some area have their own rules that require independent support to the slab or wood ceiling for the fixtures.

lightning--lighting--hay, whats the difference??
years ago before this requirement i was working in a new shopping center that had a large drug store in it. the construction was basically finished in the building and the store's shelving and store fixtures were not yet in place. the layin ceiling tile and layin light fixtures were in place. they had a trash barrel in the middle of the store that caught on fire after hours. the heat generated by this fire caused over 90 per cent of the light fixtures to fall from the ceiling grid. consider a firefighter going into this store to fight the fire???
