Why not?

Going to school/gathering certifications is just something I do.

I believe it is a good idea, keeping them in your pocket for the future, as we all know we know not what the future holds for us.

Just a note about those certificate. As of the last year, it is now a requirement to procure 24 hours of CEUs to keep the certificates valid every three years.

And that's why I still hold on to my contractors liscense.

Here in CA it's 57 hours, but that's a state requirement.

Very true.
It wasn't until I started going back to school and hanging around here that I realized how little I actually know.

For NJ EC's, the req' is 34 hours/tri-annual renewal period - 10 hours of which are devoted to NEC code and business law.
The other 24 are "electives".
If a person exceeds that 34 hour minimum, they may carry over 8 CEU to the next tri-annual period.
For 2005 - I had 54 CEUs [20 over]
For 2008 - I have 45 CEUs [14 over] ....and counting ~ I may be able to squeak one more class in

Woo-Hoo...I can entirely skip the 2011 CEU req' !

The over hours, if not used by the next renewal period are "lost".
IMHO, so what?
I'm not about bare minimums

As far as the EI CEUs, I do not know the exact amount needed ~ but I do know there is some commotion about the EC CEUs not be accepted as EI CEUs...this *may* change, maybe not.

I usually end up with over 100 hours every year, but none of ours carry over.

Depending on who was providing the CEUs, the sponsor of the EI certificates may not accept them. This happened to many of the people I know who have the certificates.
Although the sponsors (IAEI, ICC) sent out a few notices in regards to the required CEUs, many did not pay attention.

The 45['08] hours quoted ONLY apply to my EC CEUs...
I probably have 200+ hours in the classroom for '08.

I'm not "bragging" ~ just re-enforcing that there is A LOT to know and
my stunning good looks can only get me so far [now I am bragging ~]

Good to know ~ thanks for the heads up

All these certificates and such brings up another point: ORGANIZATION
It's all well and good to cram all sorts of info into one's head....but you can't very well spill grey matter onto a person's desk to show all these accolades..can you?

What I decided to do [just recently, BTW] is to scan every document into my computer [and of course back-up].
Print out a copy and place the copies into plastic sheets that fit in a 3-ring binder. The originals stay "else where".

This is turning into a monumental task...BUT...should the State ever audit me on my CEU [and other claims] everything is basically at my finger tips.

I am not blessed with your good looks, can you imagine how much harder it is without them...;)

I have done the same.

I have a second hard drive on the desktop, and I have two more remote hard drives as backup. I keep them in a waterproof firesafe.
I currently have 270 gigs of information in 1729 folders on these hard drives.

I have had difficulty of late organizing these better for access. I figure I will need a week of uniterrupted time to do this...I do not see that happening. Oh woe is me (do you feel sorry for me yet?)

One of the inspection companies in our area has gone to 3 day weeks.

We just hired a new inspector today. I didn't say we would pay him, we just hired him.;)

Business has slowed down, but our company has taken some market share from other inspection companies, so we needed another inspector.

Hey, Pierre. I'll bet I know why your company is taking more and more market share. I'll venture that it's because you are actively involved in the NEC and in NYS rules and regs and you eat, sleep and breathe the "code". And I'll bet you have an ongoing training policy for your employees. Am I close?:-?

Several County Inspection Departments in North Carolina are laying off. There were four inspectors in the county I worked in (western nc), and two got laid off as of the first of this year. I am one of the "laid off" inspectors, but I am keeping my certificates active by being on "contract" with the county. On an "as needed" basis, no less. Anyway, if building continues at it's current level, there will probably be more. I am an electrical contractor by trade, but there is not much electrical going on right now. Local government politics are in full swing here.

I can not believe that not one person has said, "what do you call 100 fired inspectors?" "A good start" :D
Probably because these are real people's lives and everyone is scared or nervous. I know inspectors are about as favored as lawyers, but timing is the key to what makes jokes funny. A couple years ago I would have found this funny. But not today. I know too many people losing their jobs.

Trust me when I tell you that my job is on the line and I've been with this city for over 19 years and for me it's either laugh or cry. I chose to laugh.
