Sorry in advance, this is all brand new to me. I am debating solar, but it is my understanding that if our panel bus rating is 100A or lower, we'll be limited to the size of the system we can have installed. But if it's 125A or higher, then we have a lot more options.
Since there is no main breaker switch, and the labels on the inside of the panel have worn off, I have no way to tell what our panel's bus rating is. Thanks.

You need to check the wire size, could be a 60 or a 100, doubt it is anything more. The buss rating is probably 125 however you can't prove that without a part number or tag. Maybe check a neighbor's panel.

really looks to me like you need a service upgrade. or??

You can't have more than six handles without a main breaker.

So I would think you need to add a main breaker to that panel. I bet you can.

Do you even have load for more solar?

Your circuit layout says you are probably under the required circuits by today's standards, nothing wrong but you could be overloading circuits.
