Electrical service to 5-unit apartment building

Hi there,

I work with a general contractor who’s planning to build a five-unit apartment building in Newfoundland. However, they’re looking to avoid a dedicated electrical room. I’m not entirely sure the best approach for electrical service, but I think it will likely be underground.

My first idea is to install a centralized, exterior-mounted gang meter socket (a 5-position meter trough) on an outside wall. With five 125A meters, I’d need at least a 600A service entrance.

I’ve noticed other similar buildings where the main service enters a mast on a pole, runs underground, and then individual lines connect to separate meters for each unit. However, I’m not sure how this is done.

If anyone has experience installing electrical services to apartment complexes, I’d really appreciate your input.

Thanks,
Lukas
