Hello and thank you in advance for any information. My question is concerning a 40 amp pushmatic breaker that keeps tripping. My electric stove when a burner and the oven are both turned on at the same time my breaker keeps tripping. I took an amp reading on both legs and they both read approximately 22 amps. So is that a total of 44 amps going through that fuse? Just wondering why this is happening. Again thanks

No, the OCPD is only seeing 22 amps.

If it's a Pushmatic it's got to be well past the useful life of the breaker. Breakers are mechanical things and will fail over time. You could replace the breaker if you can find a replacement. Note that all the other breakers could be failing also. It's time to replace the entire panel.

Does it hold when you run both the surface element or the oven individually? If so probably a failing breaker. If trips with just one of those components, maybe a problem with that component or circuitry associated with that component.

Is the breaker heating up any from a poor connection at the terminals or the buss ?

Or it could just be a bad breaker like others have suggested.

Mother's house has 63 YO bulldogs, from Sears at that time.

30A WH breaker started tripping about 5 years ago. $12 'new' breaker off fleabay fixed the problem. So yes, some bulldogs do start to trip early with age.

I think Mom needs a new panel. It makes a great Mother's Day present.

Simple troubleshooting question: is the tripping instantaneous, or only after several minutes?
