Electrical tape or short wires.

Pretend a drywaller hit the wire far back on the wire to where if you cut it you would have less than 6 inches of wire from the back of the box (300.14). Would you prefer cutting them and pigtailing or wrapping with electrical tape. Also what is electrical tape rated for/ intended uses. We use it for all sorts of stuff obviously but what does code allow.

If the copper is not damaged, something that is very unlikely, I would use heat shrink. It would be very difficult to wrap the tape on a conductor that does not reach outside of the box.

Many common electrical tape products are rated for 600V and are fine for addressing minor damage to insulation where copper isn't damaged. But I agree with the other comments in this case.

I re-insulate wire with insulation stripped from a new piece the same gauge or one up, depending on fit.

This is useful on BX where the old insulation is crumbling away. I push it as far as I can into the sheath.
